Becoming Miss Tiffany

On 23 January 2025, Thailand became the first Southeast Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage. This further cemented a global reputation as an LGBTIQ+ friendly society, boosted for decades through highly visible trans cabaret shows like Miss Tiffany’s Universe. This move means Thailand is well poised to ride a lucrative economic wave.

Yet beneath this glittering facade, most trans people face deep-seated discrimination. A gender identity bill was rejected in February 2024. In 2018, the World Bank said 77% of transgender Thais were denied jobs due to their gender identity. Cabaret is a form of escapism for Beebee. Reality is earning $12 a day litter picking; she says most employers would not even consider her for a better, public-facing role. After losing jobs due to her HIV status, she once turned to sex work.

This ongoing personal project hopes to document what impact equal marriage might have on some of Thailand’s socio-economically struggling trans community.
